Virbac AYRADIA (metronidazole) is indicated for the treatment of Giardia duodenalis infections in dogs and puppies.
INDICATIONS
On-Label Indication
Canine Giardiasis: Approved for both adult dogs and puppies to clear Giardia duodenalis (also known as Giardia lamblia or intestinalis), a protozoal parasite that causes foul-smelling diarrhea, vomiting, and weight loss.
Off / Extra-Label Veterinary Uses
While giardiasis in dogs is the single official FDA-approved label indication, the active ingredient is metronidazole.
- Non-Specific Diarrhea: Used to manage acute diarrhea and reduce intestinal inflammation.
- Anaerobic Bacterial Infections: Prescribed to treat infections caused by bacteria that do not require oxygen, such as dental infections, deep tissue wounds, or bone infections.
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): Utilized for its immunomodulatory effects in the gastrointestinal tract to calm chronic gut inflammation.
- Other Protozoal Parasites: Used to treat infections caused by other microscopic organisms like Trichomonas or Balantidium coli.
ADMINISTRATION
- Formulation: A poultry-flavored, oily suspension containing 125 mg/mL of metronidazole, designed to improve patient compliance.
- Standard Dose for Giardia: Given orally at 25 mg/kg (11.3 mg/lb) of body weight twice daily for 5 consecutive days.
