Virbac LIXEN (cephalexin) is a broad-spectrum, first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic indicated for bacterial infections in dogs, cats, and various avian species.
INDICATIONS
- Skin Infections: Superficial bacterial pyoderma, infected wounds, and abscesses.
- Soft Tissue Infections: Bite wounds and post-surgical site infections.
- Urinary Tract Infections: Bacterial infections of the bladder (cystitis).
- Other Indications: Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia) and bone infections (osteomyelitis).
Avian Species (Including Chickens & Pet Birds)
- Bacterial Diseases: Pullorum disease, colibacillosis, salmonelliosis, and gangrenous dermatitis.
- Respiratory & Intestinal: Infectious coryza, fowl cholera, and general gastrointestinal bacterial infections.
- Mortality Prevention: Combats early chick mortality caused by bacterial infections.
ADMINISTRATION
Administered orally by mixing it into drinking water.
- Preparation: Dissolve the powder completely in a designated amount of clean drinking water as directed by your veterinarian.
- Duration: Treatment is generally administered continuously for 3 to 5 days.
- Dosage: Specific dosing depends on the species, weight, and the type of infection being treated. For example, chickens typically receive 35-50 mg of Cephalexin per kg of body weight daily.
