Virbac FORTIVIR (enrofloxacin) is a broad-spectrum, long-acting fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat severe bacterial and Mycoplasma infections in livestock and large animals.

INDICATIONS

  • Respiratory Infections: Treatment of Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD), pneumonia, rhinitis, and other respiratory complications.
  • Gastrointestinal Infections: Management of bacterial enteritis, diarrhea, and colibacillosis (e.g., E. coli or Salmonella infections).
  • Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Treatment of deep pyodermas, infected wounds, abscesses, and ear infections (otitis).
  • Genitourinary/Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Cystitis, nephritis, and reproductive tract infections.
  • Other Severe Infections: Effective against bone/joint infections (osteomyelitis) and systemic or localized Mycoplasma issues in livestock.

ADMINISTRATION

  • Ruminants (Cattle, Sheep, Goats) & Pigs:
      • Dosage: Typically 3 mL per 40 kg (88 lbs) of body weight, which equals 7.5 mg/kg.
      • Administration: Can be given as a single injection subcutaneously (under the skin), intramuscularly (into the muscle), or intravenously (into the vein).
      • Frequency: Often prescribed as a single-dose treatment protocol, but can be repeated after 72 hours if clinically necessary.

  • Dogs:
      • Dosage: 2.5 mg/kg (1 mL per 20 lbs of body weight).
      • Administration: Usually given as a single intramuscular (IM) injection at the clinic.
      • Frequency: This single injectable dose is generally followed up with a course of oral enrofloxacin tablets about 12 hours later.

  • Cats:
    • While FDA-approved only for oral administration, injectable enrofloxacin is sometimes used extra-label in a clinical setting by veterinarians, typically given intramuscularly or intravenously.
